1. Immediate Response
Contentment. In the sense of relazed happiness by absolute simple means of entertainment. The expression stands out. Its pleasureable to see a child learning and investigating things, its especially cute when they discover different parts of their bodies.
2. Objecive Description
A baby laying on her back holding her feet, one in each hand. Almost folded in half, her feet are very close to her face. Investigatively she stares at her feet with her mouth open as though she is speaking to them. Maybe telling them secrets. She is expressing a look of curiosity and determination, like she is waiting for an answer from her feet, but they remain silent.
3. Formal Matters
The baby is nicely centered and the only object in the foreground. A pillow is being laid on and if you focus on what it could be, you would see that it is a pillow; otherwise when you look at the picture, you simply see the dark blue color of the pillowcase contrasting against the baby's pink outfit. The contrast is bold, but at the same time it really focuses what is to be looked at in the photo.
4. The Story Tells It
The story of the photo is cute. We just finished a "photo shoot" as to find a good emotion, and she was bored as I was browsing my photos. She laid over onto the pillow and found her feet. It was simply adorable. A friend that has seen the photo told me that it reminds him of how simple babies can be to entertain. How many children would rather play with a cardboard box then an expensive toy from the store. They live in the moment, enjoy the simple things in life. This photo is a reminder to me to always enjoy what I have and to live in the now instead of tomorrow, or yesterday.
5. The Work in the World
I am unfamiliar with Kathe Kollwitz, however browsing through some of her works I see that she is very interested in humans, portraits, and faces with emotion. I could see a connection between my photo and Kathe's drawings in that we both enjoy the human figure. Her drawings showed many different emotions from sorrow to fear. I love taking pictures of my baby and she has more emotions then one could imagine something so young would have.
